Position: Health Centre Nurse – Kew

Reports to: College Nurse- Health Centre Coordinator

Primary Purpose

The Health Centre Nurse provides primary nursing care for students, staff and any

other relevant personnel in accordance with current standard nursing practices and

assists with day to day operation of the MLC Health Centre.

Position in Context

MLC is one of Australia’s most respected and innovative schools, with over 2,000

students from our Early Learning Centre (MLC Kindle) to Year 12, including

international students and boarders. MLC is a technology rich environment, teaching

staff and students from year 5 have a notebook computer.

MLC is comprised of four relatively autonomous schools: Junior School (MLC Kindle –

Year 6), Junior Secondary School (Years 7 and 8), Middle School (Years 9 and 10)

and Senior School (Years 11 and 12). The Senior School program offers a

comprehensive curriculum including the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE),

International Baccalaureate (IB) and Vocational Education and Training (VCE - VET).

Year 9 students may participate in a unique eight week residential experience at our

remote MLC Marshmead campus near Mallacoota.

Every student at MLC is offered a wide variety of subject choices, co-curricular

activities, leadership opportunities and a strong support network through an

extensive wellbeing program.

The Health Centre provides first aid, emergency treatment/maintenance treatment

and health counselling for members of the College community. This includes day

and boarding students, ELC – Year 12 (approximately 2,000 total), staff and

appropriate others.

The Health Centre Nurse is a member of the College wellbeing structure that supports

students (both Day School and Boarding House) and acts independently within the

confines of current practice for his/her level of certification. The Health Centre Nurse

is required to practice in accordance with MLC policies and procedures as well as

the various Professional Codes, Guidelines and Registration Standards set by

Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority.

This position reports directly to the College Nurse - Health Centre Coordinator.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provide:

  • Primary health care to members of the MLC community appropriate to their

needs and to the situation.

  • Health advice and support as required.
  • Referral to other health care professionals as appropriate.

Liaise with:

  • Appropriate MLC staff and parents/guardians regarding the health needs of

students presenting to the Health Centre including:

o MLC Student Counsellors

o MLC Boarding House nurses

o Nurses at MLC Marshmead

o Staff at MLC Banksia on an as needs basis

  • Teaching staff regarding specific health needs of students (and provide

education as required).

  • Parents to ensure students have appropriate health care whilst at school and

in particular, management plans for Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes and

Epilepsy, where appropriate.

Assist with maintenance of:

  • Health Centre facility, equipment and materials to ensure a state of readiness

to meet the needs of the community.

  • Selection, requisition and dispensing of medical equipment, medications and

supplies in compliance with legal and professional regulations.

  • Updating Health Centre Policy and Procedure manual and task

documentation

  • First Aid kits, Defibrillators and General Use EpiPens throughout the College,

including the Health Centre, first aid rooms, School offices, camps, excursions,

tours as required.

  • Purchase supplies: restock kits and cupboards as needed. Keep a register of

medications purchased and dispensed.

Perform administrative functions necessary to the functioning of the Health Centre

and the care of those presenting:

  • Maintain accurate and complete medical treatment records of members of

the College community, ensuring appropriate detail and confidentiality.

  • Communications re students in attendance at Health Centre
  • Seek out, where required, and process updates to medical details of students

Anaphylaxis

  • Ensure MLC compliance with Ministerial Order 706 and the MLC Anaphylaxis

Management Policy. This includes;

  • Ensuring all students have current Adrenaline autoinjector and ASCIA plan.
  • Finalising of Individual Support plans in conjunction with student and parents.
  • Providing advice on the development of Individual Support plans for trips,

tours and camps.

  • Stocking of General Use EpiPens in suitable locations around the College, and

monitoring they are in date or need restocking if used.

  • As School Anaphylaxis Supervisor, verify staff as required in correct use of

Adrenaline Autoinjector Devices.

Professional Development:

  • In accordance with requirements for nursing registration, attend professional

development sessions, read widely on relevant topics and maintain personal record

of professional development.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria (skills, qualifications, knowledge and experience)

  • Appropriate Division 1 Nursing Qualifications, Registration and Experience
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of school nursing incorporating child

and adolescent health and development

  • Practise in accordance with legislation related to school nursing practice and

child and adolescent healthcare

  • Effectively manage material resources
  • HLTAID0011 - Provide First Aid (Previously known as Senior First Aid or Level 2 First Aid)
  • HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis (22578VIC)
  • Course in the Management of Asthma Risk and Emergencies in the Workplace

(22556VIC) Or 10760NAT Course in Asthma Awareness

  • 22303VIC Course in Verifying the Correct Use of Adrenaline Autoinjector Devices
  • Ability to work self-directed within a team environment.

Desirable Criteria (skills, qualifications, knowledge and experience)

  • Experience in educational setting, or in child and adolescent health would be

highly regarded

  • Familiarity with TASS, Adobe Acrobat and Office 365 or ability to quickly learn

new computer skills.

  • Flexibility with regards to working hours.
